Can I register if I am not a teacher working in a school?
We are unable to accept registrations directly from students to ensure the safeguarding of the children and schools taking part. If you would like to take part in Penfriends, speak to your teacher so that they can register your school directly. Once your teacher registers the school, you will be able to exchange cards with other students around the world. In the meantime, join our social media channels for more information and learning tips: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. We also have more resources and learning activities the Cambridge English website.
We are unable to accept registrations directly from parents to ensure the safeguarding of the children taking part in Penfriends. If you would like your child to take part in Penfriends, please speak to your child’s teacher so that their school can register directly. Once the school is registered, your child’s school will be able to connect with schools around the world and start we exchanging cards with students from around the world. What happens after I register?
Your registration will be reviewed by a member of our team. You will receive a confirmation email when your registration has been confirmed. Follow the instructions in the email and then start making connections!
What information can I update under my profile?
You can update information about your school such as the school name and the number of students participating. We also advise for to add your school’s holiday dates, this will help other teachers know when you'll be most active on the Penfriends.
How can I change my email address?
Contact the Penfriends team providing the email address that was used to sign up to Penfriends and the new email address that you would like to use.
Can a teacher add more than one class to their profile?
Yes, teachers can add more than one class to their profile. To do this, click the Class tab under Edit Profile then add name of class in box under School Classes then click save. The class will appear in the school’s profile.
How do students design cards?
We encourage students to be as imaginative as they would like, cards do not need to be designed on the computer some are letters, drawings and paintings.
How do I upload cards to my school’s profile?
You will find the Cards tab under your Profile, click on the Cards tab and it will open that section. Cards can either be uploaded to your profile by dragging the image from your PC or browse to select the files. When you have chosen your files click on Start upload. Cards can either be a photo or scanned image (whichever is most convenient). The cards will now appear on the school’s profile. We recommend that you select Class or Theme when uploading your student’s cards to your profile, so they appear in the Find cards section search. File formats are as follows, .jpg .PNG or .gif and less than 3MB.
How do I send cards to a connection?
Under my Account scroll down to Your connections. Here you find the status of each of your connections. Where available the send Cards button will appear, when you click on the button it will open a new page. Cards can either be uploaded to your profile by dragging the image from your PC or browse to select the files, then click Next. You will now see the cards that you have uploaded in Confirm cards, click Next when you are ready to send your students’ cards. Add a personal message to the teacher you are connecting with and then click Send cards. A notification will appear asking to either Go back, Save & exit and Send cards. When you are ready to send your cards click Send cards. The teacher you are connecting with will receive a notification that your cards have been sent.
Where can I find the address to send cards by post?
Due to GPDR we are unable to provide another teacher’s details. If you would like to receive letters by post upload your cards to your connection, as mentioned in the “How do I send cards to a connection?” include your postal address in the personal message.
What is a connection?
A connection is when a teacher accepts a request from another teacher and exchanges cards designed by their students via post or email. Teachers can create multiple connections depending on how many students they have participating in Penfriends.
The link to view my partner school’s cards does not work, how can I view the cards?
You can click the links in your Active connections which will take you to a link to view the cards.
What shall I do if my partner school does not respond to a connection request?
Allow 4 days for the school to respond, they may be on school holiday or going through a busy exam period. If you still do not hear from the school contact the Penfriends team and we can end the match on your behalf. You will then be able to find another suitable connection to start exchanging cards with.
How do I end a connection?
In My account, go to Your connections click Cards sent, this will end your side of the connection. Alternatively, contact the Penfriends team providing your school name and the name of the school you would like to end the connection with, and we can end this on your behalf.
